Enjoying the Snow

Here are a few pictures from the cottage over the holidays.  We took Cohen tobogganing for the first time.  Cohen didn't seem to understand what we were doing and that it was supposed to be fun, but he went with the flow, as is his nature.  Daddy really enjoyed it though!

Out Takes

It's so hard to get an 18-month-old to sit still for a simple photo shoot...

18 Months Old!

This post is a bit late because Cohen was sick when he turned 18 months, but better late than never :)

Our 18 month old Cohen is still as sweet and easy going as ever and is so much fun as he continues to gain more skills.  His fine motor skills have really improved in the past three months because one of his favourite activities is colouring (and taking off and putting back on the marker lids).  He still loves music and dancing and his dance moves are evolving and becoming more intricate.  But his favourite activity is reading books, sometimes by himself, but especially with Mommy or Daddy.

For Christmas Santa brought Cohen a Thomas the Train Duplo train set.  Cohen LOVES playing with it and has really started to like putting together the Duplo blocks.  Daddy and Cohen play Duplo together almost every day.

The biggest change for Cohen since his 15 month update is that he's no longer nursing.  This has changed his sleeping patterns for the better and he now often sleeps through the night (sometimes as long as 10 hours in a row!).  It has been a fantastic change because Mommy is working full time now, so the extra sleep is very much needed.  He doesn't seem to miss nursing, and continued to ask for it every night for the first two weeks, but was happy to take the bottle of cow's milk that was offered instead.

Cohen is still a terrible eater and Mommy is constantly trying to find new ways to get healthy food into him.  He'd survive on bread and milk if we let him.  His latest thing is wanting to sit at the big table like Mommy and Daddy, but unfortunately it doesn't make him want to eat any better.  He looks really cute sitting at the big table and I wonder if he can even see what's on his plate because he's so small.

Cohen's understanding of English is amazing.  He understands nearly everything we say to him and can respond appropriately when we give him commands.  Unfortunately his speech hasn't progressed at all, but he communicates very well using gestures, so he has little incentive to start talking.

We can't wait to find out what the next three months have in store for our little guy and to see what he'll learn during that time.

Lots of Love for a Sick Boy

Cohen has been home from the hospital for a week now and is recovering very well.  He'll be returning to daycare and his normal routine sometime this week.  His doctor is happy with his progress, but has warned us that it will be weeks before he's completely healed and we'll need to be very careful with him for the rest of the winter if he gets another flu or chest cold.

I'm going to back up a bit and tell the whole story.  Cohen was showing signs of being sick on Thursday January 3, but was still well enough to go to daycare.  On Friday January 4 he seemed much the same, so I dropped him off in the morning.  I was home sick with a stomach flu myself that day, so I told the daycare to watch for signs of it and call me if they thought he might be getting sick.  I got a call mid-morning to pick him up.  The two of us had a quiet day together.  Cohen seemed sickest over the weekend, but not with the same flu I had. I was worried about his breathing on Saturday, but didn't think it was bad enough to warrant a trip to the hospital.  Sunday he seemed just as sick, but his breathing wasn't as bad.  On Monday morning he perked up and seemed much better.  We already had a doctor's appointment booked for Monday morning, so I took him in and was shocked to be sent directly to the ER at the hospital and later that afternoon admitted for the night.  Pneumonia was confirmed that evening when the results of his x-ray came back. One night turned into five and he was such a good little patient the whole time.  While in the hospital he had two x-rays, blood taken twice, a nose swab, a urine test (very tricky with a kid in diapers), countless checks of his vitals (temp, oxygen levels and listening to his chest) and of course treatments with ventalin mist every four hours to help open up his breathing.  On top of all that, he had oxygen tubes taped to his nose for the first 3 days and an IV in his hand for the final two days.  It was a lot for a little guy to go through, but he made it as easy as possible for us and his doctor and nurses.

A great big thank you goes out to all our family and friends who have sent Cohen gifts and cards, come to help us out and sent their love and prayers.  It fills our hearts with joy to see how much our little guy is loved.  Below are some pictures of the edible arrangement and balloon sent by Uncle Matt, Aunt Brenda, Serena, Ayla and Maeve, just one of the many surprises he got.

Sicker than he looks

This is Cohen after 5 straight days in the hospital for pneumonia and a  bacterial staph. infection in the blood. He's a trooper making the best of his unpleasant situation. He isn't always this chipper but he's been very good all things considered. It's been a long week for all of us - especially Meghan. Hopefully Cohen will be home in a day or two and hopefully back to normal soon after.
